Review of the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K captures up to 4096 x 2160 DCI 4K images at rates up to 75 frames per second in a variety of codecs including Blackmagic Raw at several bit rates and ProRes 422. With the 6.6 update, the BMPCC 4K now offers up to 80 frames per second in a 2.8K raw mode for 4:3 anamorphic and up to 75 frames per second in a 4K raw mode for 2.4:1 widescreen. There is a de-squeeze preview option of 2.33x for 4:3 recording, and there is also a zoom option of 1.33x. Slow motion can be captured in 2.6K raw for Super16 lenses, and in cropped Full HD. The 6.6 update is designed to make operating easier, with support for the Pocket Battery Grip and built-in horizon leveling. The 6.6 update also includes new features such as USB PTP control, customizable frame guides, up to 8x pinch-to-zoom capabilities, and the ability to embed custom LUTs in metadata in Blackmagic Raw.

Pocket Cinema Camera lenses can be fitted to the Micro Four Thirds lens mount. An adapter is available separately for use with other lenses, including PL, C, and EF. The camera features dual native ISOs up to 25,600 for low-light capture, and a 13 stop dynamic range for rich, HDR images.

Capture longer clips to an external drive by using the internal CFast 2.0 and SD/UHS-II card slots or the USB Type-C output. As well as reducing the need for an external, onboard monitor, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K’s 5″ touchscreen LCD allows you to output a signal to a larger monitor. The menu and interface are the same as those on the URSA Mini camera. If you’re ready to commit, you can use 3D LUTs to monitor or bake your look.

A mini-XLR audio input provides phantom power for pro-style microphones, and a 3.5mm jack integrates a stereo microphone. The URSA Mini also has the same Blackmagic OS as the URSA Mini and Bluetooth remote control. This package includes a license key for DaVinci Resolve Studio for flexible post-production control. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K’s carbon fiber composite chassis provides lightweight strength and durability, and it can be powered by the included Canon LP-E6 type battery or the supplied power supply.
